There
are three things involved in Status:
Sex
Money
The
last steps (respectively) are optional, and only used when making magically
enhanced jewelry, or impressing the lady-friends.
Now,
I’ll go on to explain why you will be choosing what metals and gemstones.
These numbers will be in reference to the list of implements in the
foremost section.
Some
(more) things to thing…er…think about when starting a Jewel craft trade:
There are two approaches to raising skill depending on when you start.
If you start early without much money you will want
to max your skill to 21 at the guild with practice points. After this you have to make items to raise skill.
Spend time killing things and selling the items you receive for money
with which to spend on jewelry supplies.
If on the other hand you have some money already,
you may want the minimum 1 skill to begin your trade, and save practice
points for later in life.
Below,
I’ve got the in-game jewel craft manual transcript for your perusal.
(We, the authors of the Guide, shamelessly stole this because, well, one of us was rather new to the game and thought this was fairly good reading. It will not be corrected, but will be commented on throughout by noting the {} shaped brackets. The brackets, like our thoughts you will note, are curved and pointed.)
This
technique is the legacy of jewel craft Master Srettib, who was able to draw upon
the force of mineral essence. His passion for working with the rarest and most
beautiful stones quickly lead him to concoct a firm setting to ensure the
precious stones would not be lost (as was often the case with previous wire
techniques). His artistic genius not only led him to create molding settings,
but enabled him to convoke the latent magical powers within stones and
externalize them. He coupled stones with various metals to control the outcome
of the powers he unleashed. {Except
the one that killed him. Diamonds,
when combined with gold, are known to unleash a power in a woman called
“birthing”, and this caused Srettib to be unfortunately suddenly and
inexplicably separated from EverQuest altogether.}
Every
jewel crafter learns Srettib's techniques, and in homage to his memory, all
other forms of jewel craft have been abandoned.
Jewel
Craft Master Srettib's Instructions:
All
jewelry carries a unique charm. Exquisite stones placed in the finest crafted
settings, are more likely to release the force of mineral essence.
Try various combinations. Combine
any stone with any metal to create unique jewelry {or combine unique stones with
unique metals to create any jewelry}. Precious stones are generally cut {as most
jewels tend to be} so that they will reflect the most light. Other stones may be
tumbled for a smooth surface or left untumbled if they have an interesting shape
{as some jewels from certain countries tend to be}. Pearls and crystals are
generally left natural. Use the
molds in your jewelry kit and pour melted metal into the mold, allow it to cool
and remove the metal from the mold. To
add cut stones, carve a pronged cup mold so that the prongs are down and the
base of the cup is at the top. Weld
the base of the cup to the top of the ring, bracelet, etc. Insert the stone into
the cup and carefully bend down the prongs to trap the stone.
To add odd shaped untumbled stones, custom carve a mold to fit the stone
with bottom of the cup at the bottom of the mold. Pour a small amount of melted
metal into the mold and immediately insert the stone. Allow to cool and remove
from the mold.
Use the following chart as a guide when learning jewel craft to decide when to move on to the next practice gem, unless you like wasting money, which some people feel compelled to do in EverQuest.

A
good city for Jewel Crafting is Kelethin, as the Metal vendor and both common
AND rare jewel merchants are only one platform away (Check the maps). Although
if you’re not very well liked by the “Light” races, you might want to
choose a subtler Locale. I’ve
heard that Erudin is a nice place to go if Both Qeynos AND Freeport hate you
(But keep in mind that you might get lonely, as no one ever goes to Erudin and
stays). I’ve been told that there is a Jem Shop, Metal Vendor, AND a Bank on
the bottom floor of Erudin Palace. (Not sure–I’ve only been there in
passing) Now before you do
anything, you might want to save up your practice points and put as many as
possible into your Jewel Craft skill (21 is the max at the trainers).
Let’s
get started. You'll want to purchase
a jewel kit at the vendor, and if they don't sell one at the jewelers, the
metal vendor should have one. From that point you'd want to buy a few stacks
(60 bars or 3 Stacks) of silver, and then return to the gem vendor.
Buy a number of Cat’s Eye Agates (Those starting out at a lower skill
level than 21, might want o consider using the lower gems [Malachite] to start
off with), depending on what your skill is when you start your Jewel Craft
(remember that you’ll be working with silver until your skill is nearly 50.
Now, don’t go and buy 60 Cat’s Eyes, you’ll only be working with them
until 22) you might also want to buy a couple of backpacks to hold your finished
products as the jewelry does NOT stack. (This
will keep you from making too many trips back to the vendors.)
Now,
let’s get started with the fun part. Go
find somewhere nice and out of the way and take a seat (if you’re in Erudin
this should be easy, NOBODY EVER goes there, it’s the loneliest city I’ve
ever been in). Click on a bar of silver (CTRL-Click), then click it in
the kit, and the same for the Gem, then click combine. (If you need help
with this step, reread and try again. If
you STILL need help, please return the game to wherever you bought it for a full
refund; we don’t need your kind on the servers.)
If you fail, then do it again, if you succeed, put it in a backpack (If
you started with less that 21 skill in Jewel Craft, don’t be discouraged you
will fail more often, but still gain skill points).
Eventually your skill will go up to 22.
Congratulations, It's now trivial to you (supposedly), so move on to the
next gem using the trivial chart.
Refer
to the Quicker Way to Raise Trade Skill Level in the central Trade Skills
Notes now if you wish.
Following
my instructions, you'll eventually fill up your inventory full of your jewelry,
so what do you do? Sell them back to a vendor. Continue this until you're
completely broke (Like I did, stupidly, then had to beg for food), or your skill
is around 48.
At
this point, you'll notice a large gap in the Trivial Chart... Silver Emerald
trivial at 48, Silver Ruby at 75, and Electrum Malachite at 74.
It’s going to get tougher from here for a while, seeing as you’re
going to attempt to create something with a skill level of 74. (For those of you
who started with less skill points this should be familiar). Yes, that’s right
I said 74. Why not 75 like the
Silver/Ruby skill? Because it’s
too stinking expensive that’s why! Now why would you want to pay over 80pp an
attempt to get Silver Ruby trivial? You
don't, not for 30-some levels anyway! Go
with the 3pp attempts on Electrum malachite, now this will cost you a lot of
money, but not as much as if you worked with rubies.
You need to go exchange all the silver you have left (if any) for some
Electrum Bars, and then buy more electrum (You’ll be here for awhile, you’re
going to need a LOT of Electrum). This
will keep you busy until your skill is about 74. You've now "mastered"
silver jewelry (Wow, WhoopdeeDoo, you’re King of the Mundane). Every silver
item you make from this point should be trivial to you, with the exception of
the bugged ones.
At
this point you'll want to continue climbing the trivial charts just like you did
with silver, until your skill hits 118. You'll then have to do another metal
conversion to gold (hey, now your rolling), only this time the metal is 10+pp a
bar (Depending on Charisma, but this is the basic figure), this is where you'll
lose the most money and get discouraged, but if you hang on, it can be worth it.
From that point, ride the trivial chart up to skill 188.
This
is roughly the point that even the most stubborn and sodden jewelers leave off
at. With a skill of 188, you should be able to make platinum jewelry with a
failure rate of roughly 40% of the time, which is kind of costly, but worth it.
Once I get around to raising my Jewelry skill a bit more, I’ll update
this, but until then, good luck!
Now
for the good part, some people neglect to see the simple and immediate
values in jewel crafting. For example, a Silvered Sapphire necklace is +4 str
AND +4 int, now THAT’S a nice piece of jewelry to own (Remember to enchant or
have your bars enchanted BEFORE you make the jewelry).
You can charge other players (You know, those NON-Jeweler types) up to
200pp for these lovely pieces of Magical Art. Your jewel craft skill only needs
to be 74 to make these, and the profit can then be turned to increasing your
skill even more!

A
Gem in the Rough, Guide to Jewelry Making
(We just added this in because it
was on yet another site, and we wish to give you, the viewer, multiple means of
doing things so that if one of our methods is wrong, our asses are covered.)
Story
of a Dwarven Jeweler
(This
is a direct Transcript; I have to apologize for the bad linguistics of this
stumpy little Dwarf)
Think this little bauble is a mere trinket? I guarantee that when worn
you will be granted the strength of ten Ogre's and this precious little item
will grant ye the learning to be quicker of wit then any Erudite. How can this
be so? So you want to be a jeweler do ye? Very well. In case you be dull of wit
and slow of hand I will start with the basics. First ye need to buy ye a
jeweler's kit. This be the life blood of any true jeweler as it contains all the
necessary tools a crafter needs. Now that you have yer kit you are ready to
begin, right? Well I would recommend you speak with someone wise in his learning
on many subjects such as yer guildmaster or me as we can teach ye a few pointers
and save some unwanted mistakes that may cause the fool to loose more cash then
they care to loose.
Now
onto to basics of SILVER!
Find yerself a local merchant, like that cute lass and her sister over at
the Jewelbox shop in Qeynos. Ask them about their wares and purchase yerself a
bar made of the purest silver, none of that cheap stuff as my apprentices will
be more then jeweler hacks, and a malachite stone of the richest color.
Carefully and with tender care place the bar and stone into yer jewelers bag.
Grab the tools from the kit and go to work on creating the easiest shape
possible, a ring(for the slow hit the combine button with the bar and jewel in
the kit). With luck ye will have created yer first piece of jewelry, a silvered
malachite ring! Marvel at its beauty and depthless. What ye say? Wearing yer
precious ring does nothing? Why that's because ye fergot to add the most
important ingredient to the mix... magic. Aye this is now where the hard part
comes in, unless ye dabble in the mystic realms or the enchanter arts, which as
a jeweler I highly recommend, an
enchanter will need to be found with the time, proper spells, and willingness to
help.
Since I do dabble a bit in the mystic arts let me see one of yer bars of
pure silver. There yah go. Now let us make that same ring you made earlier again
this time with an enchanted bar of silver. Just place the bar with the malachite
into the kit and go to work. If you are skilled enough the magic within the bar
of silver will pull out the true mystical properties of the malachite stone. Ahh
fine job, ye have now created a lovely silver malachite ring that will make
there wearer less likely to feel the ill effects of any poison, 'cept the kind
of poison brewers make fer us.
If yer still interested in the art of crafting jewelry ye need to spend a
lot of time on it. Practice in silver with a stone until you feel that working a
particular gem into silver is no longer worthy of your skill (again for the slow
of wit after malachite becomes trivial for you start working with silver and the
next expensive gem lapis).
Yer a little low on cash? What to do with all your wonderful creations? I
need not spell this out but I will SELL THEM!!! Silver jewelry tends to be hard
to sell since no matter how pure the silver it can not bring out the true
potential of the gem it is worked with. Ye can try selling any piece of jewelry
created back to any vendor in any town but like all vendors, they are there to
make profit and will never give the full price back on any jewelry created,
although they price can come quite close to the total material costs. Now
adventurers, of which abound in the world of Norrath, will sometimes pay
handsomely for a well crafted piece of magical jewelry that suits their needs.
Ask around I'm sure you will find willing customers who will pay good prices on
jewelry.
Once yer skill is high enough (around 45 which is about the time silver
and jade become trivial to make) it's time to move on to the next level,
electrum. Why move on to electrum now when there are still more gems out there
to work on with silver that are still more difficult? Simple economics young
one. Although yer skills are improving ye are not a master yet. Ye can still
make mistakes and loose the materials of whatever ye were trying to create.
Losing an expensive Ruby which is over hundredth times the cost of a bar of
electrum and malachite is much worse. And since you learn from yer mistakes,
might as well make yer mistakes in a less costly fashion. Electrum being a purer
metal, and much harder to wrought, will also produce finer items then what could
be achieved in silver. Also the cost per making a piece of jewelry goes up as
well. Switching to electrum can also be very costly and most of yer attempts
will go awry in the beginning. My apprentices stick with it though, for I teach
no slouches. Since electrum produces better jewelry then silver, ye will find
many more customers beating a path to yer door wanting some wondrous bauble they
can take home.
To
increase yer skills as a jeweler in electrum, just like in silver, ye must
continue to work up with more costly and richer gem stones. But once you have
mastered the Peridot, it is time to move on... to gold (your skill will be about
100 and you will now be considered a master jeweler).
Ahhh gold! The master of all greed! Few jewelers attain the skill to
master electrum let alone attempt to master gold. Ye may now be a master jeweler
in yer own right but yer learning is far from done. Gold can be very costly and
very rewarding as it will bring out even more of the potential of any gemstone
placed in it, after being magically enchanted to do so that is. Just like before
if you wish to master gold you must continue to start with the cheapest of the
gems and move up to the hardest. And just like switching from silver to
electrum, switching from electrum to gold will be costly, time consuming, and
will very rarely lead to any results until ye learn enough from yer mistakes to
truly understand gold (and just like switching off after silver/jade to
electrum, switching off to gold after electrum/Peridot will be much more cost
effective in the long run the losing 100+ plat on sapphires and rubies per try
compared with 12+ with gold/malachite).
Finally when ye have reach the skill to master making gold and sapphire's
into a most marvelous earring, it is time to move on to the pinnacle of all
metals and a height which few ever achieve, platinum (a skill of about 165). As
I said before, few ever reach it here and as such you are no longer my
apprentice but a peer and true jeweler in yer own right. By now many across the
land will come to know yer name and the beautiful things you can create. By now
all the things have I taught you should keep ye well until none can surpass yer
level of expertise (a skill of 200). I now move onto a new apprentice.
--Viscar
jeweler in many realms.
